I learned to sew on a machine like this, making quilt squares that my grandmother and I quilted together by hand. I was around 6 years old.

My Mom had a Singer treadle sewing machine in her and my Dad's bedroom. Like your Granny, tremendous, I used to watch my Mom's feet peddling away. Never knew what she actually made, but it was never our clothes.
This pre-dates my mother's Singer portable sewing machine. When she would have an afternoon of sewing, it had to be on the kitchen table. When dinner time approached it was reverted back to a dining table from a sewing room!
