I worked for a short time as a long distant operator back in the 60's.

Oh how I miss landline phones. 100% better than these complicated so called smart phones. People use to actually talk to each other. now they won't lay em down. even sleep with them!

Hard to believe we thought that these colored phones were something we wanted. Before this, the old phones were usually all black.

I think that most of us on this site have either had one of these or at least used one. However, mine was black!

Hey, Elijah13, did you mean to say DON'T "put the key in someone else's pocket"?

My brother worked for the phone company. Between him and his friends, a lot of us had the clear dialer disk (with the finger holes in it) as keychains. Hard to lose, easy to hold, and room for lots of keys and doodads.

I think it was so you could share it. Not sure however. Looking now to see what this storm is going to do. Looks like it is going to go thru lots of Florida. I'm preparing NOW for it.

Manatee, where are you?

Gainesville. We had a lot of shelters during Irma, including several pet-friendly. I work for the County, and shelter duty wore me out.

But if you need a shelter and we have them, you are welcome here! We didn't turn anyone away in Irma. There were some bedraggled souls who were running out of gas in their cars...made it all worth it really.

Have survived a few of them with no house damage either. My niece was just here and we put the finishing touches on it. I just plan to stay home until the lights come back on--I'm sure they will go off but have 6 lights to use. I'll just be hot. You stay safe also. Not sure where this thing is really going to hit land.

A sturdy house that has proven itself is a wonderful place to be. Do I remember correctly that you are in the Tampa area? I hope she changes tracks. And I hope there are none after her. I'll be fine in a county shelter, and if I'm home and it gets unsafe for my little tin can, my landlord brings me into his home...gee I hope he stays thru this one too. :)

When they were new we thought they were so cool. I also remember the "Princess" phones, which I really wanted but never had.

I was totally surprised to receive a pink Princess phone for Christmas when I was 13. We'd just purchased the farm and moved into the house. My dad said I needed my privacy to talk on the phone since I was a teenager!

The down side was we were on a party line (any one else remember those? ) and all calls were limited to 15 minutes, max!

Yes, I remember party lines. I didn't know the calls were limited. I wasn't allowed to use the phone at that point. When I got older, by that time the party line was no longer. However I still had to limit the length of my calls.

My Dad set the limits and strictly monitored us! It wasn't the phone company's rule.
