In honor of our fallen soldiers, written in 1915:
In Flanders Fields
BY JOHN MCCRAE

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

So many, so very many, fought and died for our country, our freedoms.

And yet, so many "millennials" and younger know little or nothing about the sacrifices people have made for our country. Those subjects seem not to be part of the "modern" curriculum. I think it ought to be mandatory for high schools to show movies like "All Quiet on the Western Front, " "Band of Brothers, " "Schindler's List, " "Good Morning, Vietnam, " "We Were Soldiers, " and a few other excellent movies.

I agree, but we can't blame the younger generation for what the older generation didn't teach them. These are important enough to be handed down from one to the other. My ex died last year from Agent Orange he acquired in Viet Nam. Terrible thing, war.

As you say, we can't blame the younger generation for what the older generation didn't teach them. However, if the schools don't teach about patriotism, pride in our country and the sacrifices of so many, like your ex husband, who fought for our independence and freedoms, that teaching should fall with the parents. In fact, it should START with the parents. Our very lives depend on those who protect us. Hugs.

Always forgetful, I had to look up (again) the significance of the red poppy on Memorial Day. Per Google

"The poppy has a long association with Remembrance Day....Once the conflict was over the poppy was one of the only plants to grow on the otherwise barren battlefields. The significance of the poppy as a lasting memorial symbol to the fallen was realised by the Canadian surgeon John McCrae in his poem In Flanders Fields."

In England people wear a red faux poppies on their clothes. I remember when I was a child we used to do that too. Sadly that custom seems to have stopped in the US.

Veterans still sell the red poppies to pin to your clothes her. They just are not everywhere as they were in the past. It seems only the WWI & WWII veterans care enough to do so, or remember the significance as much. I guess they forget, like I do.

That is a great looking puzzle. The poppy field looks very beautiful. God makes everything beautiful. Happy Memorial Day everybody! Today also happens to be my birthday today.I haven't posted on here for a very long time, but I'm still doing puzzles here. I've been very busy for so long. I just play puzzles and then head off to sleep. My wife Jrea73 does the same thing too. We're both doing good. It's great to see that CatLadyOKC and the rest of the bunch is still here. It's also nice to see the new members of this great puzzle community interacting here too. I just thought that I would leave a comment and let everyone know that my wife Jrea73 and I are doing alright. I hope that every one is doing alright too. God bless everyone and have and have a blessed day. :-)

Challenging, but satisfying puzzle.
Never forget.
In today's newspaper comics there were two very thoughtful ones about never forgetting and always honoring.
