I was delighted to see polar bears at our zoo...They spent a lot of time swimming! At the zoo you could climb down to a lower level and actually see everything goin on under water as if you were under water.

Is it named for the Roger Williams that played the piano, I got to see him in person once & have many of his albums. My younger brother was a piano student at that time & was still in grade school & he came over after the concert & talked to him...after that my brother learned to play Autumn Leaves, my favorite.

CatLady - from their web site:
1871 - Betsey Williams bequeathed her 102-acre farm in memory of her 3 times great-grandfather, Roger Williams, the founder of Providence.
1872 - A "menagerie" of small animals and birds was brought to a section of the park so that visitors could get a closer look at wildlife.Roger Williams Park Zoo was one of the first zoos to open in the United States.

Thanks for the info...most interesting. Maybe he could have been some relation down the road...I think his home was from the northeast but not sure.

Morning Cat Lady--Roger Williams left MA & went to RI for religious freedom. His gold figure rests on top of our State Capitol Building. Around here, he is called the Independent Man.

Thanks for the info....I just caught on a short program (also missed part of it) so I was just interested if there was any connection.

Speaking of zoos - my father was a planning for a zoo in MN. I knew all about it before everyone else and even got on tv.

Aren't they magnificent? Love their broad heads and those enormous paws. But these days it makes me so sad when I see them, with their world shrinking around them :-(

Polar bears are great swimmers - an adult polar bear can swim about 60 miles (95 - 100 km), which is why many zoos that have fairly new polar bear exhibits will have plenty of water for the bear(s) to swim in. Unfortunately, a zoo cannot set aside enough space to replicate a polar bear's natural habitat, so sometimes, they'll pace in a really small area.

If we aren't able to slow down climate change or reverse some of the effects in the Arctic, polar bears won't have much place to live or, they'll will stand out, as will many Arctic animals by being white in an area where there's not that much snow and ice.
