When I was baptized my godfather gave to the guests a stuffed ladybug and a small bag of sugared almonds as a thank you for attending the ceremony. My mom has kept one in the box of my childhood memories...

I take that in Britain, they are called ladybirds instead of ladybugs.

Jamie, That's what I understand.

Ladybird is actually the correct name of the beetle. Ladybug is used more in the US and I can't explain the reason for it. Unless, perhaps, it's because it's as "cute as a bug"...:>)

Oh, that's so good! I love ladybirds - and they're good news in the garden (though like so many other creatures they're under threat from us humans and our wretched pesticides) :-(

Hi nlbuchanan, I call them ladybirds in Australia that is all I have known them as. The larvae of ladybirds are good for the garden as they eat aphids. Years ago, when I was much younger, I remember crawling around collecting them for my friend's husband to let loose in his organic garden. :-)
