They don't really have a smell. They have very long needles everywhere on them also. The plant is called Bougainvillea and they grow very fast and out of control if you don't trim constantly. I grew up in Southern California and they are everywhere. I grew to hate them even though I agree they are very pretty. But once you've been stabbed and scratched by them you grow to hate them.
