Wonderful multi-colored gums balls! This takes me back to the 50's and the penny candy store at the end of our street when I was a kid. :) Wonderful memories. Whenever my friend Brian or I had a penny or two, we'd go down to the penny candy store. We'd share down the middle whatever candy we bought with our pennies. We were best friends. :) Great memories.

My favorite "penny candy" story is when I was in the first grade, my friend & I walked to school and passed a little store. We could get a nickel's worth of candy. At recess, we had an arrangement that whoever was being pushed in the swing got to suck on the jawbreaker. When we switched places in the swing, we swapped the candy. Remember -- this was the 50's -- we also drank out of water hoses & played in the dirt!

Oh yes, I do remember those old round gum ball machines with the little metal flap. Sometimes when we were lucky, 2 gum balls would fall out. :)) I do remember those days when we were not to particular about germs. We also drank out of the water hoses. The small gen. store by my school had a soda bar and a candy counter; we used to go there before school started and purchased our supply of candy...for me it was jawbreakers. They lasted a long time and then there was a gum ball in the center. My other favorites was the "circus peanut", the root beer barrels and the red cherry licorice rope.
We played in the dirt too. My brother had a sand box, some neighborhood cat used to use it as a litter box. We had to clean it out often. :)) Makes me laugh some of the things we did as kids, and didn't think anything of it. :)

Early 50's are not good memories for me, had polio in Sept. was in hosp. for 3 mos. then had to catch up with school and lots & lots of exercises. Did not get to see my new baby brother until he was 3mos. old, but I was one of the lucky ones no serious after affects.
tomandry: see you have been really busy with your puzzles. Grandson mowed grass today, it was a real challenge took twice as long to get it cut and edged. It is so nice to see the sun, blue skies & fluffy white clouds. Crickett is loving it, he has been hiding out in the front wild flower bed, thinks we can't see his little face among the flower. He send kitty hugs >^-^< !!! We are spending most of the time inside, dew points in the 70's & temps in the 90's (VERY MUGGY!!! )

Oh yeah...those were the good old days. Days where you took off on your bikes and your parents didn't see you, or worry about you, until lunch or supper time.

Yes micki those were the "good old days". I had a little blue bike, second hand my parents purchased for my birthday. We didn't mind second hand items back then, just as good. Got us were we need to go. I used to go to the small river with my friend Brian and we used to fish all morning long. Completely away from all the adults. Just had to be home in time for lunch. :) That was freedom. :)
CatLadyOKC...It's very hot and humid here too. Having a storm coming from the Gulf for the next hour or so, it's 4am, 76degrees and 91% humidity. Very, very humid. Was out for a bit yesterday afternoon, went right back in. So hot and humid, couldn't stand it. Took my breath away.
So sorry to hear you had polio. That had to be tough. I know of only one kid in school that had polio, he wore braces on his legs. His mom drove him to school, he could not get on our bus, steps were to high. He did fine otherwise, just didn't play sports. He did like to fish. :)
Yes, CatLady I did have the time to do lots of puzzles. I had stomach distress, so could not get much done. But doing much better this morning.
So good to see the sun. :))) Crickett is a happy boy, sneaking around the garden. :)) >^-^< So good he's having a good time and enjoying the sunshine. Sending kitty hugs and caress to Crickett. Have a good morning.

That must have been tough on your nephew, dbnc2. Working for the telephone company, if it was an outside job, that is tough work. Your nephew had a lot of courage. Good luck to him. :)

The gumballs I remember each color had a different flavor, although some weren't that noticeable. Many colors were some unidentifiable fruit flavor, but black was licorice.
