Fantastic bird! Looks to me like it didn't quite make it through Darwin's theory of evolution--kinda prehistoric?

In "real life" it is a quite beautiful and elegant bird. I don't think it looks at all prehistoric. It's just the way it is positioned in this picture.

I think the only time I have seen a great blue heron in the wild was while taking a canal tour in Amsterdam - one was perched on the bow of a houseboat.
