This is so true. All we have left are the sweet and sometimes not so sweet memories. I focus on the good times we had and feel bad for the guilty for the bad times.

Often it is hard for humans to put themselves in someone else's place in order to more fully understand people we are having a hard time dealing with. This is a common issue with how we feel about our parents or siblings. As you say, the time to understand what in the background of these difficult people caused the rub is before they pass. We are all a product of our upbringing and adversities that we have encountered. No one is completely to blame in the breakdown of interpersonal relations. Gently discussing how people feel about problem areas sometimes is actually possible. But most never try...in time.
We cannot shower kindness upon those we love after they have gone.
