Good morning all. What a pretty little bird. Well I don't know how little it is as I have never seen one, but it looks little in the picture. Lovely colors. Still having a little rain but not as cold. Hope you all have a wonderful week and you all be safe.

Mr Google says they go from 17-33 cm. Which is 6-12 inches. I remember in the 1970s "kingfisher blue" was the colour of choice for many. Today I suppose it goes by the name of "teal."

"Mr Google" made me laugh orinoco...thank you. Isn't it amazing how many beautiful birds there are in the world? Makes me very happy and grateful.

Orinoco thanks for the info. Have you ever seen one? Will have to look them up. They are bigger than I thought they would be, pictures can be so deceiving sometimes. How have you been? Hope all is well with you and yours. Take care and be safe.

Thank you, Orinoco! I often wonder about some of the pictures in nature that are here on the puzzles. Seldom do I look them up.....laziness, I guess, so I truly appreciate it when someone has looked it up to educate all of us. Thanks again!

When we lived in Roxbury we used to fish quite a bit. We'd get up at 6 and bundle up (it was cold those mountain mornings) then head downstream where the river behind out home widened intop a lake. We sta for hours without a single nibble. But across the lake a kingfisher was having no trouble diving off a tree branch and catching fish after fish. Each time he'd swoop back to his branch, gulp down the fish and "laugh." If you have ever heard a kingfisher you know his sound is similar to Woody Woodpecker's--it sounds just like a laugh. He was surely finding our vain attempts hilarious.

I've seen them on documentaries, but never heard one laugh! Reminds me of when I was a kid watching old b/w Tarzan movies...the "jungle bird" that you always heard was actually an Australian kookaburra, not an African creature at all.

That's a great story pixi! You're not talking about Roxbury, CT are you?

Nope, xyxy. New York. Northern Catskill ski belt.
I loved it there but winters were frigid and long. My husband had an hour drive to work thru the mountains and was stranded in the snow all day once. We left to move close to his job and 3 years later the job closed and we had to move again.

I wouldn't be surprised if kingfishers and kookaburos were related.

These kingfishers are beautiful and can be seen frequently if who walk by streams in the English countryside, all you may see is a flash of blue and a splash has it dives into the stream to catch small fish. Its colours are vibrant and makes it a very popular bird to look for.
To God be the glory for His wonderful creation.
