We don't always appreciate butterflies in their larvae stage.

I have a thing for butterflies from their beginning to the time they can fly. It is reminding me that a new life is emerging. It also reminds me that my son is being transformed from his earthly body to earning his Angel wings.

As a kid I used to like playing with the ones called (I think) teddy bear caterpillars. They're black and fuzzy with a rust-colored band around their middle. Then one day one of them bit me. I seem to strike most critters as an appetizer.

I remember reading about two caterpillars observing a butterfly. One said to the other: "Youd nevere catch me up in a thing like that."

That's adorable.
How many "i would nevers" has life foisted on you?
I'm trying to think if I have had any.

Actually the caterpillar is quite right. The other caterpillar would never catch him if he were up in a thing like that.

Have a blessed week everyone. It is Monday again and promises to be a busy week for me. Already halfway through these last two courses. Lots of reading, quizzes, discussion board, and a paper. Fun stuff!!!

I did get two quizzes done and one of my papers.

I love butterflies. A black butterfly means my son is with me. He always said he wanted to return as a butterfly. I had a beautiful black with blue butterfly outside his bedroom right after he passed away. I think he was telling me that Jake is okay now. 9 years and I still cry.

It's ok to cry. It's a good thing. Your son and all in heaven see and hear your tears. I did.

I wonder why they're called butterflies.
They don't look like butter to me.
And it's no surprise their likeness to flies
is another comparison I just don't see.
If I left out a plate of butter,
would it cause them to go a flutter?
Would they take delight to light on it?
Then perhaps it just might be
an adequate reason
this name so unpleasin'
applies
to butterflies.

May a smile be your umbrella today.

Cute, pixipixil. I wonder why, indeed, they are called butterflies. Google, anyone?

Nlb, somewhere in the deep, dim recesses of my memory, I remember reading they were originally termed "flutterbyes" for the way they flew, but it was changed to butterfly as the official name way back when. Don't take that as gospel, however; my memory resembles a sieve quite often!

I'm with Aknan. That's how I remember it too.

I found this: before 1000; Middle English boterflye, Old English buttorfluoge. and this:
[Old English buttorfluoge; the name perhaps is based on a belief that butterflies stole milk and butter]

Supposing the butter had salt in it perhaps the butterflies were landing on the butter to get some salt. There is salt in clay, which the butterfly in the puzzle is sitting on. Butterflies will extract salt from the clay.

LOL, apparently there were some letters in the Old English spelling of butterfly, thus the garbled bit in my message.

There's a classical piece called flutterby. I'll take a look and see if it might "sound" like a butterfly.

Here's a website with several derivations and a list of names in quite a few languages:
