Saw a mother and cubs in Alaska. They came to the edge at the top of a gentle hill ---- and the cubs tumbled down --- like a somersault --- and Mom followed.

Nice picture but that is one to avoid. A mother with cubs can be very dangerous.

Bears--very popular in children's stories and programs: Goldilocks and the Three Bears, The Berenstain Bears, Yogi and Boo-Boo Bear, Smokey the Bear, and the cuddly Teddy Bear. (I won't get into panda bears.)

I think of the Christmas song we'd play every year as part of our high-school bands repertoire--The Teddy Bear's Picnic, "If you go out in the woods tonight, you'd better not go alone..." hmm, hmm, hmm, hmm, "Tonight's the night the teddy bears have their picnic! "

As a child growing up, I had two younger brothers, and I started a club for us called 'The Three Bears Club."

When I was very, very young, my father told me not to go back to the woods (we had about 12 acres of woods on our property) because there was a bear back there. (I never saw the bear.)

That's all I have to share about bears.

Wishing all a "beary" good day!

When I was very little, we had an old scratchy record of The Teddy Bears Picnic that I loved to listen to. You're the first person I've ever found that knows of that song - I was beginning to think I'd imaged it! What I remember is "If you go out in the woods today, you better not go alone. It's lovely out in the woods today, but better to stay at home. For every bear that ever there was, will gather there together because...today's the day the Teddy Bears have their picnic."

Thanks for sharing, vmarie. I wish I had had 12 acres of woods to grow up in. BUT I would have been scared of the bear and it would have broken my heart to only be able to look at the woods.
I remember Teddy Bears' Picnic. I used to sing it to my son and play guitar.

My grandfather used to take me for walks back to the woods. He had a favorite spot by the creek where he liked to fish.

A creek, too? Sounds like heaven to me!

It still is, pixipixil. Whenever I visit my brothers on the farm, I always have to take a walk back to the woods. Lots of memories--mushroom picking in the spring, Grandmother teaching me the name of the cowslip flowers, tasting the wintergreen berries, and hours of play. In the wintertime, we always depended on the woods for our Christmas tree. Much, much joy and fun! ***

I can appreciate that. I'm glad you have those visits and memories to enjoy.

Wow. Three cubs. I thought bears had a max of 2. No wonder mama bear looks so thin.
Why don't cub scouts become bear scouts?
Hoping you all find what you need today.

I was thinking the same thing about the triplets and Mama being thin. Cub Scouts have animal ranks - bobcat, tiger cub, wolf, and bear, and then webelo before they go on to boy scouts. One of the higher boy scout ranks is eagle - so I guess they learn to fly? :)

Thanks for the info, manatee. I was only aware of cub scout, boy scout and eagle scout. What's a webelo?

Pixi, we've seen bears with triplets quite often in Denali National Park. There's one sow in particular who always seems to have 3. We were watching her one day down by a stream and one cub just wasn't staying as close as she liked. She hauled off and smacked him with a paw, rolling him over like a top, and had no trouble after that.

In the old days, circa 1960, Cub Scouts had a Lion rank that came after Bear. Related to the Jungle Book story. And as Eagles, we learned to soar!

Pixi, I got this from wikipedia - "Webelos is an acronym meaning "We'll Be Loyal Scouts". According to the Bear Cub Scout Book of 1954, the name originally came from the initial letters of "wolf, bear, lion, Scout", the rank of 'Lion Cub Scout' became obsolete soon afterwards."
Scouter, thank you for that info. Did you get to be a Lion? If so I hope you saved your badge. I'll bet you did soar as an Eagle! My brother loved his scouting years.

Hi Scouter. I see by your name you are dedicated to scouting--such a wonderful activity. When I was in grammar school the family two houses away ran a cubscout den and I used to watch them playing but being a girl, I wasn't allowed to join. I had my dad's boy scout manual and used to study it. It had such wonderful drawings. So I joined the brownies and quit in months, disappointed to find instead of Indian lore and camping, we would be learning to cook. YUCK!

Pixipixil: My sisters had a similar experience though they stuck it out through grade school. Boy Scouting's participation rules changed when they were in high school; so they were able to join the Explorer program.

Nice to know. No kids or grandkids to see through that although I do have a granddaughter but she is beyond our reach now so to speak. When we had foster girls we took them to join the brownies. They seemed to like it.
