Dbnc2, to keep your pipes from freezing, leave them dripping at night (or anytime it's anywhere near 0 degrees), and leave the cabinets with pipes in them (and next to outside wall) open so the heat in the house can keep them from freezing. Works like a charm!

Wish I could say the same about my children. I have been told they are soooo busy working. They just don't have any time for me any more. Times have really changed as people, children, have as well.

Glad your pipes defrosted! Drip faucets below 32 degrees and leave cabinet open! We woke this morning to a flooded basement where 2 teenagers were asleep! An inch of water covered the floor, coming in from the week's ice storm and today's rain and warmer temps! My son in law and grandson got out to pick ax and shovel the ice away to make a path for the water to run to the side yard! We have been spin drying towels all day and keeping them over the wet places. It's finally under control, but we'll probably need a new carpet, new linoleum, etc. The insurance company has been called, but it will be a few days before we get a call back from the "catastrophe unit"! My grandson's college text books, which were in his book bag on the floor, are soaking wet and ruined. We took pictures of everything for the insurance claim. What a pain! PS. I agree- thank God for my daughters, son in law and grandchildren (and his girlfriend)- they always come through when there is a problem.

Lydia, I'm so sorry you're going through this. My son and his wife went through almost the same thing a year & a half ago when a flood in the area leaked about 2 feet of water into their basement. They had just refinished the basement and put down new carpet. They lost everything including the walls (drywall), furniture, boxes of baby clothes and supplies for their new baby, etc. etc...The flood relief fund wouldn't pay anything because they had insurance. Insurance wouldn't pay for anything because the water came UP through the ground into the basement instead of running DOWN from the rain. They finally have saved enough to reconstruct the basement this summer, 2 years after the flood. They are now expecting their second child and need the basement for a playroom for the kids!

I pray you do not encounter any of these problems and the catastrophe unit is able to help you get back to normal. So sorry you are going through such a cold, snowy, disaster of a winter. Glad you have such a wonderful family nearby!

JoyceRogers, thanks for your concern and so sorry your son went through this. His was MUCH worse than ours. The insurance co. called today and will send an adjuster soon. We just had an inch or so, so the furniture is okay, but we may need new carpet in the bedroom area and new linoleum in the living room and kitchen. Hopefully there will be no problem!

Wish that could happen here...we really need new carpet and flooring through the whole house! :) Unfortunately, we live at the top of a very steep hill...all the water flows away from our house! Guess we'll have to find another solution! lol!!

Funny, we live at the top of a hill, too! But, there was so much ice build up that when it rained several inches on Saturday all the rain and ice melt had nowhere to go but down into the basement! We had put new carpet and linoleum in the basement 7 1/2 years ago when we moved in, so it was all in great shape still. On a positive note, because we live at the top of a hill, this can't be considered a "flood", which we don't have insurance for!

Thank goodness this was a patient horse. Normally my phone never rings yet while I worked on this beauty I had six calls. Now he/she and I can ride off into a peaceful sunset.
