How do they get so many colourful patterns on their wings? It's just extraordinary.

Their wings are covered with delicate scales, each with it's own specific color. That's why it is hard on the butterfly to be held by the wings as the scales are easily destroyed.

I think that might be a painted lady and not a red admiral. They do look similar when the wings are shut.
