They are delicious, sweet and just wonderful. If you buy one ask the store how to tell when they are ripe and then enjoy.

Very slimy inside but do taste good in bread and cookies.

I have never had a persimmon but I did just see them last week in the Meijer store here in Michigan. I just recently read an article about kumquats, I have never had them either. I would appreciate any comments on them as well. What an educational site this is.

I find persimmons useful in baking. I grew up on persimmon cookies. I actually just made some persimmon bread yesterday. I had one package of pulp left in the freezer and now it's all gone!

Almost a painting. Wonderful color combinations. A perfect persimmon is a real treat but woe to any who eat one not yet ripe.

When I stayed at the ashram yoga farm in Grass Valley, California, they had a persimmon tree. You have to be sure the fruit is soft and ripe; otherwise, it will pucker your mouth! The ripe ones are very delicious and would even make good baby food.

I have never tried a persimmon but I would I am always up to trying new foods. As long as it is not to acidic I would probably like it. I have to admit those pears look yummy! I love pears!

You can find 2 types of persimmons at your grocery store - the heart shaped one and the squat tomato shaped one. The heart shaped one is astringent and they should be peeled before eaten. These are best when fully ripe, chilled and eaten with a teaspoon like a custard. The squat persimmon (fuyu) are best eaten fresh, they are crisp and sweet. Much like avocados, both can be bought quite unripe and kept until they reach the right level of ripeness (a little soft and the "button" removes easily)

Thanks those are helpful hints because I really had no clue. :) I live in Missouri and those are not common for my area.
