Have never tried to grow herbs.

Some are very easy. I have oregano and tarragon growing in the yard plus chives which are a nuisance because they keep multiplying out of control and choke off other things. And mint attracts unwanted things too and also grows out of control so I removed it.
Basil and dill are harder because the varmints eat them.
With dill the butterfly caterpillars eat it all b4 I can harvest any. Did borage once because I like blue flowers.

I had to start pulling up dill plants which had self/bird seeded all over the place! I also had a wonderful variety of oregano (I think that's what it was) that spread like crazy. It was lovely.

I wish I could grow rosemary. I can't cook with it but the plant is beautiful and smells good. Unfortunately it likes dry, warm climate--not upstate NY cold and wet.

Pixi, have you tried growing rosemary in a container inside next to a sunny window?

Yes. Not enough sun or something. No luck. Even with bay window, too few sunny days in winter. We rival Seattle for gloom.

Hi Pixi,
Often when growing from seed the container used is too big. This encourages roots to grow but not the greens. Start small, also their are sun lamps.

I have what used to be called a grow lamp--bulb is special for having full spectrum light. This year the plants I started with it hardly grew at all. After two months I put out some of the plants and also started outdoor seeds. The seeds beat the plants to maturity. Maybe there are better lights now but they are very expensive. Might look into it again.
I take in many potted plants. Gazanias over winter very nicely. Usually they remain bug free but last year for the first time I got white flies. Nevertheless they survived. Geraniums are also good to overwinter. Others get plagues of scab bugs, white flies, aphids---you name it. After many years I'm letting a large croton die. It just got too big. That also did well inside.
I might buy one of those fancy hibiscus and trim the roots like they do to bonsai. The web sid it works.

Beautiful colours! Herbal oils have many uses, and herbal vinegars, too.

Forgot to say: if you steep fresh or dried rosemary in rubbing alcohol it makes a good rub for people who are bedridden or in wheelchairs, etc--a few drops on the hands and then rubbed on the skin is refreshing and relaxing.

I bet you could do that with witch hazel, too. It would be a little more moisturizing for the skin.

Lavender is good for relaxation.

Aknan, how do you know witch hazel to use?

ParsonWayne, you have to have the courage to ask witches which one is Hazel.

It's good to take breaks, as long as it isn't on your bones.

PW, it's simply that the computer is in my office and I'm not at those times.

This one took me a while - quite possibly because I'm really tired. Normally, I end up taking naps during the day, but the past couple of days, I didn't because of appointments, although my appointment yesterday was cancelled because of the snow (actually, more of an issue of not clearing the streets of snow).

Why so tired Jamie? Do you not sleep well at night?
JamieT
Jan 6, 2017
Normally, I take naps because I usually only get about 3 or 4 hours of sleep at night, I didn't have a chance to take a nap on Wednesday. Yesterday and this morning, I kept nodding off. Part of it's due to my medications, parts because of boredom.

Thanks for asking!

I usually sleep 4-4 1/2 hours every night, but I sleep fast. Occasionally I take a nap too, But often the only nap I get is between Midnight and 4 am.

I don't know why but it's gotten to where I sleep about 10 hours a night. Wish I didn't sleep so long.

A Psychologist would accuse them of keeping everything bottled up inside. But it is a great way to make scents.
