I first saw it in 1950, when I was eight years old. They did not have the platforms like they do now so that you can walk around and see a lot more of the inside of it. This is a particularly beautiful picture of it. It is definitely worth the trip and so are all of the Roman ruins nearby, like the Senate, the Baths of Caracalla, etc. What a beautiful city. By the way, I have been back a few more times since.

I felt the same way Jean. Saw it in 1977 and two years later we went back. We went to this city and some others as well. Loved this country! Someone I went to school with lived there.

I first saw the Colosseum in 1956, when I was 20. Saw it again and walked all around inside about 3 years ago. Still just as exciting. Could almost hear the roar of the lions and the crowd.!

I toured the Colosseum about 50 years ago. Saw it again about 10 years ago but it was under repair then. Amazing place. Puzzle a little hard since lots of the pieces look very much alike.

I thought the point of ancient ruins was to see them as they aged. Repair doesn't fit into my concept.

The Colosseum is still used today for concerts.

That's an interesting - and previously unknown (to me) fact. Repairs would be in order, then.

Imagine what this would look like had people not removed parts to build houses with. I don't know if the Colosseum had any damage from WWII.

I've never been to Rome - I've been to Milan and Verona. Verona has a smaller arena from the 1st Century AD (or CE). It's also used for concerts - supposedly the acoustics are amazing, which is amazing because they didn't have ways of drawing up plans and determining that having the seats at such-and-such height would improve or destroy the acoustics.

Supposedly, they had all sorts of events here during the time of the Roman Empire that we couldn't do in our modern stadiums. They could flood the place and reenact naval battles to inform the people of Rome about what was happening elsewhere - and when you consider all the different languages that were spoken - Rome reached from Spain to Britain, Germany into the Middle East and Northern Africa (my high school Latin teacher told us that Latin was more of a written language than a spoken one), people could be both entertained and informed on recent (or historic) events.
