Dogs, I love 'em!

Lost our 12 year old Saluki / Greyhound X last Nov due to an extremely virulent cancer growth in her stomach, and our 19 nearly 20 year old Whippet Collie X last June. Currently dogless, we have become a safe deposit / holiday home for many local dogs whilst their owners go on holiday.

The best of both worlds really, rarely without a dog for more than a week, but no responsibility - their owners supply food and any other wants - all we have to do is exercise them - and thus us - make a fuss of them and then hand them back.

Like I say, best of both worlds.

Aren't they cute. I love dogs. They are so understanding and do everything but talk to you. I've told before about my bishon and how much I love him. He's seven years old and he is with me constantly. He sleeps at the foot of my bed and he's the best little watch dog ever. He only weighs 25 lb and probably wouldn't hurt anyone but he likes to act tough. Whoever wrote dog is a mans best friend said a mouth full. I live by myself and talk to him as tho he were a person. That's getting pretty goofy isn't it? I'd sure be lost without him. Have a great day everyone. The sun is shining and everything is looking green. I have tulips up and have my door open to get some nice fresh air. I think Spring is the most beautiful time of the year. Thank you God.

Logan, Just wanted to tell you that my husband recently returned home from Afghanistan and I spent a year alone mostly staying at home as I have health issues and my dog, Beau, was my salvation...He will be three Oct. 20th, He is an American Pit Bull Terrier and the love of my life...he is as sweet and gentle with me and takes every step I do...Most of the time he was the only one I talked to...I taught him to say somethings believe it or not He can say Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh Mama and Out when he has to potty He is not a barker or rowdy just a good loyal dog and he loves people no one seems to fear him cause his tail never stops wagging...He weighs 85 lbs but I can walk him he doesn't try to drag me So its not goofy...If a 70 year old woman can raise a Pit Bull and have a wonderful gentle dog anyone can if they try...Love your dog they are so important in people's lives...Everyone is trying to get me to let Beau be a service dog but I am not sure yet...God Bless

Katygirl, you're dead right! I'm 71, and my dog is a StaffyXPittyXMastiff - and he's just a honey. Loves meeting other dogs and meeting people - and they all love him; he's a lovely companion. It's not the breed, it's the upbringing that counts. He keeps me fit, too - insists on his daily walk! How do you mean, a service dog? Don't let him go, he'd leave a hole in your heart!!

Jiggler, Service dogs are used for a wide range of jobs...I was referring to Beau going to hospitals and visiting sick children and into the nursing homes and visiting the shut in and elderly..One thing I have learned senior citizens have no fear of Beau whatsoever I guess it takes a little wisdom and nonjudgemental people to give certain breeds a chance...I remember not long ago it was the Rottweiler and before that the Doberman...I firmly believe dogs are a reflection of their raising and there is no way around that..Cesar Milan is my book of knowledge on Pit Bulls cause he has 25 of them and he should know...Have a wonderful weekend and God Bless I admire you for raising a wonderful dog...

Dear katygirltoo, I'm so happy that your hubby got home to you and certainly hope and pray that he doesn't ever have to go back!
I had a friend who owned a very friendly pit bull who was named, "Kitty". This dog was an escape artist and no matter what the family did with their back yard, Kitty got away from home and went out investigating the neighborhood. The Dog Catcher got to know Kitty and gave him free rides home. Kitty got to sit in the front passenger seat for these rides happy as could be!

Starr that is an awesome story I read recently that a female Pit Bull named Elle was named Service Dog of the Year she worked with mentallyh challenged children and ones with reading problems We live in the country on 120 acres but Beau is not bad to wander sometimes I think it is just the point of being fenced in Beau is a house dog he has allergies so I don't let him roam loose I go out with him not on a leash but I sit on the porch and he does his business and then comes and lays on the porch by me..he is so cool and laid back he loves people but I will say he hasn't been around small small children except one time at the vets office and he was ok with this little toddler petting him and hugging his neck...all my kids are long grown and my grand kids But Beau is my 4th pit and never ever had an incident or problem just pure joy and love between them and everyone Have a great Sunday and God Bless

Ah katy, Elle sounds wonderful! I believe it is YOU that makes your dogs so great--nothing to do with the breed. You raise 'em right! That is so nice to hear about.
You have a great Sunday and God bless you also!

Katygirltoo - ah, that kind of service dog (I thought you meant armed services!!! ). Yes, service dogs (or assistance dogs as they are often called here in NZ) are wonderful animals. I'm often just stunned by the things they can do, and the empathy with their human guardians. But you couldn't let Beau go - it would break his heart and yours! Plus he's already a service dog...for you! Long may your companionship flourish :-))

Hi Friends. Although I am a cat person, because we have always had cats, I love dogs too. I always thing of the old saying,
'"There are no bad dogs, only bad owners" and I truly believe that.
