You have them. I was in education for about 35 years and when the school year started, I always prayed for patience and guidance to help the kids. I also prayed for safely for everyone in all schools. Blessings, Leia!

Congrats! I worked as a teachers aide at a special education school. I felt really sorry for one student 7 years of age - he had leukemia. Cute as a button. Kids have started school today.

Leia, you have qualified for your position and God was behind you all the way. He will stand behind you as you teach, too, and give you patience and tenderness for the children under your guidance. Hugs - and prayers, too.

I was going to go into teaching. I recall a tutor I had for astronomy saying oh it's easy and why don't you get it. Then telling me that he doesn't have any patience. Should have said yeah then why are you a tutor? Teaching does take patience. Helped a 7 yr. learn to tie his shoes. I spent about 20 min. with him. Kept giving him encouraging words - He kept saying I can't do it. I said oh come yes you can! I'll show you and then you do it.

I see that calculators are now being added. What happened to go old paper, pencil and your brain to solve things? Next on puzzles will be computers!

Elijah, our schools up here furnish laptops (or whatever the equivalent is now) to the kids, beginning in first grade! When we have a snow day, no one misses class - it's done remotely on the computer. Could never have imagined this when I was in school!

They are doing laptops in our schools now--not sure about my county, but Orange County (Orlando area) is doing it this year. However, when we lose electricity, no one will be able to do anything! Sad! I still think we need to teach the basics! That's how you will survive in life.

I agree - we need the basics as a foundation for learning all through life. I was sorry that cursive writing was dropped as being not relevant any more (not that mine was any good! ) I know grandparents who can't send cards or letters to their grandkids because the kids can't read cursive!

Elijah, I'm an investment advisor and at a recent conference, a colleague asked me what platform(s) I used in my analyses. When I said "pen, paper and my brain", he became very offended and stopped speaking to me!

Sad when kids can't read cursive. Haven't run into that YET! We do need to get back to basics.

Aknan, you don't need that person. I do most things by pen, paper and my brain. At least my brain stays active. However the computer has many things I wouldn't know. I love National Geographic and some of the other sites on the computer where I have learned many things I didn't know anything about.

I'm happy to see they still teach abacus to the little ones. I'll bet nobody teaches slide rule anymore.

I don't think they even use slide rules anymore! I found my old one a few months ago and couldn't even remember how to use it. Another mental task computers have taken over....

Oohh....just the kind of colorful puzzles I LOVE!!! Back in the ice age when I went to school, we never used an abacus, and weren't allowed to use a calculator. We put pen to paper and used our head to solve arithmetic problems. I still remember my times tables, but can't remember where I put my glasses. LOL

How exciting for her! I remember my daughter's first day of college. Now her daughter is a senior in high school and making all those hard decisions. Life is good! I pray blessings over your granddaughter.
