Yeah debbie! I love okra too! Especially fried but pickled okra is good and in gumbo and vegetable soup etc. MY family is from Georgia so maybe it is mostly a souther thang.

So for you okra lovers...how do you fry it? not a fan of it in gumbo/stews, too 'slimy' for me. Flavor isn't bad, so maybe if it was crispier??

Of course it has to be cut into coins. Dry it real good then you can dip it into batter for frying, but what I do is make a flour, cornmeal, salt & pepper mix coat the okra really well, sometimes I use a bag to shake them in. Then fry in hot oil in a skillet of deep fryer. You have to be very gentle putting them into the oil so coating doesn't fall off. Don't mess with them if they are a pan wait until one side completely brown before gently turning them. In a deep fryer they will take care of themselves. Remove to drain and slat some while still hot and vulnerable.

Sorry, made a bunch of mistakes above. Skillet or deep fryer (not of).....salt them again after removing to drain, not slat, hehe. This is the way I make fried green tomatoes too. After trying multiple different ways I've gone back to this simple way. Great flavor!

Kjd3682, we simply sliced the okra into rounds, about 1/4 inch thick, rolled them in seasoned cornmeal and fried them in a little hot oil until golden brown. Drain and serve hot. Great with fish.

Yep I do about the same as talent except I have to watch my salt so I use Mrs. Dash seasons in my batter. :)

Kjd, did you try the fresh okra? I haven't been brave enough to try it, so I'm hoping you had success and loved it!

I confess I hven't as yet, but living in the Pacific Northwest, we don't see a lot of okra in the produce section. Maybe someday?

I think that okra is the only firm evidence that we have had contact from outer space, LOL! (Well, maybe kohlrabi).

It takes special handling, elijah, and it really is an acquired taste. I like it best sliced in rounds, rolled in seasoned cornmeal and fried quickly. Best eaten hot.

I just looked it up on line and it has a lot of medicinal qualities. I don't know which is worse-the taste of okra or the pain of neuropathy etc. I think I'd eat the okra if it helped. What is the weather like there in Florida today?

It is funny you should write about the weather where you are in Central Florida. I just got an e-mail from my friend in Winter Springs and she said it was too hot there to go outside and that they were having thunderstorms. It was beautiful here today. Sunny with temperatures in the low 80's. I got everything prepared for dinner and after I put the roast in the oven I went outside and worked on deadheading my outdoor plants. I don't move too well so I planted 17 pots and my husband brings them to me at my work table and I tend to them. Most of them are doing great. The petunias are getting a little leggy though. I really enjoy my time outside. We had such a hard winter that it is so nice to enjoy the summer. Hope you had a good weekend and are ready to begin another week tomorrow. Good night!

We are having weird weather here right now. Tuesday's high was 91, yesterday 68 and today should go up to 78. Rain for the weekend.
We have a family reunion to go to on Sunday. It is at my cousin's house about 40 miles from here. I'm anxious to see everyone. Our family is getting smaller all of the time, it wasn't too big to begin with.
Well, I'm off to the vegetable market. I'm taking pasta salad to the reunion so I have to go buy all of the makin's for it.
Stay cool tomandray and Santa. Everyone else have a good day.

Hope you had a great reunion and everything went as planned, pity you aren't over here at Ilkley they are having a summer festival, lots of street entertainment and on the 8th and 10th of this month they are having a continental market and bandstand events, they are having various other events on different days, which go on till the 30th August, maybe one day you could visit here and have a taste of Yorkshire. All the best Santa.

Hi Santa, Thank you for asking and yes, we had a great time at the family reunion. All of my 12 aunts, uncles and my mom & dad have passed away as well as 3 1st cousins and 2 2nd cousins. But I still have 8 first cousins and their spouses plus many younger ones. There were about 35 in all. Everyone brought a dish to pass and everyone took "doggie bags" home. I brought home some Swedish meatballs, Kielbasa, tuna salad and an assortment of desserts. I have a cousin, Mark, who has had Lou Gerrig Disease for about 5 years now. He is quite crippled. He gets around in a scooter now but he sure hasn't lost his will or his sense of humor. I ask everyone to keep him in your prayers. There were a couple of little ones there too. Both under a year old and they were a delight, just as good as could be. It has been 9 years since our last reunion and I hope it doesn't take that long until the next one.

The summer festival sounds interesting. I am mostly in a wheel chair when I go out (arthritis & neuropathy) so we don't get to go to too many places like that.

I hope you have a wonderful day!

Glad you had a super day and had a good talk with all your family, it is one thing we now miss has everyone seems to spread their wings and there are very few whom have time to talk to people now, I think this is a fast world and people seem always to be in a hurry, sorry to hear your transport is a wheelchair, but at least with your wheels you can get out, my daughter in law Mom Has now got an electric wheelchair and loves it, gives one that bit of independence, it does get her down at times, but she says she is better off than most people.
Take care and my blessings are with yousending you lots of hugs and when you are feeling a bit low take out one of the hugs and think about all your friends and family whom wish you well. Love Santa.xx
