Had an interruption phone call from a neighbor about her cell phone so took longer to do than it would have had with no interruptions Haven't seen a cardinal like this.

I have never seen an almost white cardinal. Our cardinals are bright red. Beautiful bird.

The females are more of a cross between light tan and terra cotta. This photo is a bit on the light side from the sun hitting the feathers.

I have never torn a cotta in my life, as far back as I can remember - which would be yesterday.

Your accent is showing ParsonW. My accent sounds more like terror cotta than tear a cotta. but it's all good when it adds up to a pun.
So I'm glad your cotta isn't torn because I've never seen any menda cottas around.

Pixipixil, the menda cottas are now extinct, unfortunately. They were killed off during the plague. :-((()

I don't know. If I were a cotta and my cousin cottas were extinct I don't think I could relax even if I'd have gotta cotta sanctuary to stay in. Those cotta poachers are sneaky dudes.

Guess he is a relative to our state bird, the Red Cardinal, in Virginia. I love birds.

Kittykat, I think she's in breeding colors. Females are usually not that bright, you're right.

So many female birds lack all the color of their male counterparts. Perhaps it makes it safer for them when nesting.

My female backyard cardinal is redder and fatter, but I think she is several years old. They always announce when they are at the feeder--drives the cats crazy. Sometimes they get do excited they bang their heads n the glass. The cardinal just flies away and comes back soon. Even my canary feels safe in his cage. He challenges the cats.

I have a really pretty picture of a cardinal on top of our cherry tree while it's blooming. We have a pair that nest in our yard so I see them all year. They have a distinctive call that's easy to recognize and during mating season, if you imitate the male, he will compete with you and keep making his song longer and fancier.
It " sounds" like he is saying "tchew, tchew, tchew, whip whip whip whip." Sometimes he starts with just the tchew part. If you are good at imitating him, do the same number of "tchws and whip's" as he is doing and he will start to add more and finally trill like a canary. It's great fun.
Wishing you good bird watching today.

Pixi, you would have loved our cardinals in Arkansas. Mom called them to the feeder by whistling "The Blue Danube".

You're right. That would have been awesome. Was looking to move there for a while. Love the Arkansas love of nature. Visited petit Jean Park twice, Queen Wilhomena Hotel twice, also once each Mt. Nebo and Devil's Cove or something like that. Never got to see the Crystal Church. It was booked for a wedding when we were around. There's been a new art museum built since we visited I'd like to look at, too.
