That is what I was thinking, dizzipoo. My mom had a shuttle like this but I don't remember what it was used for.

I don't know anything at all about this kind of needlework. I guess a loom and a lot of "know how" are needed. Any of you puzzlers able to explain?

I presume the wools are just twisted like that to keep them from tangling. The shuttle will be wound with the wool and used on a loom, as you said.

Could it be that the shuttle spins the thread, which is then twisted into hanks or ropes to be used later? Rather like spinning wool thread with a shuttle and spinning wheel?

My sister has a great big loom. She weaves placemats, rugs and wall hangings with it. She puts vertical threads as wide as the project on the loom and then there are foot peddles to move the "warp" up and down so the shuttle, (which is shown here), is thrown left and right. You throw the shuttle left, then pull a bar thing down to push the threads tight at the bottom, then move the foot pedals so the down threads are up and the up vertical threads are down, then you throw the shuttle from left to right between the open vertical threads, pull the bar down again to tighten the threads, and then do it all over again. With different colored threads, she can make a pattern and what comes out at the end is a heavy woven cloth with a design on it. She makes placemats, baby quilts and all sorts of woven things. I have a problem explaining real well but I hope you get the idea.

Animalvr143, I understand perfectly - I've used a loom like that down in Mexico, just to see what it was like. It's work!

I bet the bias is perfect too, not like todays things, you can't fold a rectangular item square, and they don't last long either.

Yes, LOTS of work but the results can be really beautiful and satisfying to know somebody went to all that work just for me.
