This is the second time around for me. I still am in awe of this little part of a real castle in the USA. I had never heard of a castle in the NEW world so I guess this really is a history lesson.

There are a lot of hidden sites around New York City. One of the advantages of growing up in certain areas - you have the ability to see a lot of historic sites, museums, etc. The town I grew up in, the only historic sites we went to were a minor Civil War battlefield and the state capitol building. Each location was over an hour away. Children growing up in cities usually have several museums to attend, if not other places.

Oh my gosh, talk about education, here is some history that I knew nothing about.
At the turn-of-the-century, George C. Boldt, millionaire proprietor of the world famous Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City, set out to build a full size rhineland castle in Alexandria Bay, on picturesque Heart Island. The grandiose structure was to be a display of his love for his wife, Louise.
Cool, eh? It isn't very big, though, in my opinion. Sigh. No one ever built me a castle!

I've been there. Yes, a typical Canadian tourist :)

It's beautiful. The sad thing is that his wife died just months before the completion of the castle. We were touring the 1000 Islands. Many moons ago!

I believe I've heard of this place. It was mentions on "Sweet Retreats" a TV show. So sad his wife Louise did not live to see it finished. Thank you so much for the info. Would love to go up there to see it one day. :)

The castle is actually quite large. What is pictured here is the powerhouse.

A man's (or woman's) home is his/hers castle. If you have love in your home, it is your castle. May God bless.
