I used to have a gooseberry bush. The fruit are delicious. My little granddaughter used to boast that she could pick them without getting stuck by the thorns. She used to love to eat them. Then my neighbor rode his car through the fence and the bush. I was never able to find a bush like it again. I tried but I got one with smaller thorns, but they were so numerous that I gave up and dug it up.

Funny stuffausiesapphire! Chuckles and I have not heard of these berries but has anyone heard of gooseberries? I ate those when I was little right off the bushes. They look like grapes with sticker soft thorns like a cactus!

OH I REMEMBER GOOSEBERRIES. My mom would do all sort of good things with them. But then she was good at taking nothing and making something great out of it.

Cindyj28 - Oh, yes - your Mum was just like mine. I was born during WW2 and just after the war we were extremely hard-up: we rented a little bungalow that had fruit trees & bushes in the garden, and my Mum got the best out of those. Hard work with no fridge or freezer, just bottling!! my job was "topping and tailing" the gooseberries for jam or bottling :-))

Love plum jam. Used to have a plum tree that put out so much fruit I could supply the neighbors. First peach borers attacked it and then a fungus finished it off. I miss that tree. My husband still talks about it...and the great jam I made.
