I did a paper on Gaudi for my art history course. He was a religious symbolist--imbedded in the undulating walls of his park Guell is the Angelis. It was designed so that the sun would light the pryer at the correct time of day.
This cathedral of his had windowsusing leading made from the discarded pieces of knitting machines and he used columns built at an angle rather than straight so they would follow the force lines of the load they carry. He hung string from the ceiling with proportionally weighted sand bags to figure out the angle. This maakes his cathedral the inversion of earth's gravity. And the use of discarded material refer to the stone rejected by the builders becoming the cornerstone. I wish I could get to Barcelona to see this some day.
Wishing you all a day of high aspirations.

Pixi, it's really the most incredible cathedral you can imagine and it is truly beautiful. I was able to explore it when I lived in Spain many, many years ago. Highly decorated, inside and out. I'm sure, from research for your paper, that you know we get the word "gaudy" from his name.

I like to think of the Latin word gaudeamus--(we rejoice) in conjunction with his name instead. His architecture is so full of joy.

So Gaudi! Many European cathedrals take centuries to finish, and some, like the cathedral in Cologne, suffered from several bombings during WWII. When I was in Hamburg about 25 years ago, there was the top of a cathedral spire fenced off, just sitting on the ground.

I visited this church three years ago. It is truly magnificent! Barcelona is also a wonderful city!

And I thought I moved slowly! That church was started in 1882 and has not yet been completed? Wow! I assume it is just constantly having parts added to it.

The cathedrals of old (although this one is fairly new compared to Romanesque or Gothic built ones) often spanned many lives. The Vatican Cathedral, St. Peter's, went through several architects lives just for the dome. Because of this the styles often were mixed as well.
